This was our chosen photograph for the commission of Dollar the horse. Below are a few we decided against with reasoning why to help you select the perfect photo for your commission.
Photo quality- the more detail the better, if the original photo doesn’t have much detail it’s very hard to get a highly detailed drawing. I can use my artistic license, but the drawings look more life like & characterful from a good quality photo.
This photo wasn’t selected because it wasn’t very detailed & Dollar wasn’t looking his best!
Lighting- Ideally you want a photo with good lighting & not casting any big shadows or really bright white (over exposed) areas on the animals face.
This photo wasn’t selected because there wasn’t much contrast on his white nose & would look a bit flat in a drawing with no shadow on the white.
Angle & perspective- Think about the angle of the original photo & if it will look good as a drawing without the context of the background. Also the perspective of the picture.
This photo wasn’t selected because Dollar was keen to have the treats from the photographer which looks cute in a photo & in context. In a drawing & out of context, he may just look like he has a big nose!!(Sorry Dollar)
Bridles & collars- I can edit out unwanted collars, bridles, head collars etc. But again, the drawing will have more realistic detail if I don’t have to use my artistic license.
In this photograph I edited out the yellow tag on the dogs collar.
This is ‘Fudge‘ the dog as a work in progress. The owner asked me to remove the yellow plastic tag off her collar for the drawing.
